First Steps Junior Academy is a progressive and innovative Private Day Nursery in Portadown, dedicated to providing a quality educational programme in a secure and supportive environment. All of our staff are dedicated to the children in their care, making every child’s physical, social, and emotional development their priority.
Babies and Juniors Rooms
The baby room was renovated in 2010 and offers lots of opportunity for movement and sensory exploration allowing our babies to connect with their environment. Once our babies are ready and mobile they are introduced to their new room (First Steps). Here the children aged 1-2 years can practice their ever increasing skills, exploring what they can do on their own and with support. Our Junior room (Junior Academy) accomodates children aged 2-3 years. This busy little room is always a hub of activity. The children love singing, dancing, looking at books and of course getting messy.
Our pre-school staff will refer to the pre-school curriculum in order to develop programmes of learning. They will observe the children through play, recognising and building on the experiences that the children bring from home. Our pre-school children are given lots of opportunities to explore their environment. Our aim in the pre-school room is:
- to encourage the children to be confident, eager and enthusiastic learners
- to prepare the children for their next step in life: “big school”
First Steps Out of School Academy
We offer after-school facility that caters for children from primary one to primary seven. This facility is organised separately from the pre-school/day care facility. The facility is conveniently situated at Edenderry Methodist Church Hall between the Gilford Road and Bachelors Walk. We provide a range of physical activities, including tennis, football and badminton. Other activities include arts and crafts, library, home corner, shop etc. The aim of our after-school facility is to provide a fun, relaxed and stimulating environment.
Working in Partnership with Parents
We firmly believe that no one knows their child better than their parents/guardian, so it is our aim to work in partnership with parents. We endeavour to keep all parents informed of their child’s progress and all parents are invited to share feelings, concerns and suggestions about their child’s care, visit our nursery and participate in our programs.
